Background of the Study
Rural women are central to economic development, particularly in Nigeria, where they contribute significantly to agriculture, small-scale enterprises, and household management. However, systemic challenges such as limited access to resources, education, and decision-making power hinder their economic empowerment. Development communication, which emphasizes participatory and inclusive approaches, offers a pathway to address these barriers by disseminating information, fostering skills development, and creating platforms for collective action (Adebayo et al., 2023; Musa & Hassan, 2024). In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, rural women face unique socio-economic challenges, including gender inequality and restricted access to markets. Recent studies indicate that targeted communication strategies, such as community radio programs, women-focused workshops, and mobile technology campaigns, can significantly enhance women's access to information and resources (Ojo et al., 2025). By empowering rural women through development communication, communities can achieve broader economic and social development outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite their significant contributions to local economies, rural women in Lafia LGA remain marginalized, with limited access to critical resources and decision-making opportunities. The absence of effective development communication strategies exacerbates these issues by failing to address the unique needs of women in these communities (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2023). Research highlights a disconnect between the available communication channels and rural women's preferences, resulting in poor engagement and limited impact (Adamu et al., 2024). Without strategic interventions, efforts to promote rural women's economic empowerment will continue to face significant obstacles. This study assesses how development communication can bridge these gaps and serve as a catalyst for rural women's economic empowerment in Lafia LGA.
